A Wind Farm’s 4G Upgrade

“Legacy OT (Operational Technology) equipment such as controllers, monitoring devices, analysers, that gather data from site assets and communicate to the monitoring servers such as SCADA systems, were based on serial communications. They employed serial ports as means of comms channel/connection to the systems. With the advancement in OT networking, serial communication has now become obsolete, and is no longer compatible with most current networking equipment, such as routers, switches, etc.

As 3G service was being shut down, our immediate task at hand was to upgrade the site networking equipment to enable 4G communications. The challenge was with upgrading our legacy monitoring equipment which only communicated over serial ports (RS232/422/485). This is where the W&T Com-Server was identified as the solution necessary to achieve this serial to ethernet connection to establish communications with our 4G router. The W&T Com-Server is compact, din rail mountable and can be installed easily in panels where space is limited. It also comes pre-configured with the required serial to network communication and hence is a plug-and-play solution”
